Frequently asked
How many articles does the EU AI Act have?
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 contains 113 articles across thirteen chapters, together with thirteen annexes and 180 recitals. It was amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, the Digital Omnibus on AI, which added new prohibitions to Article 5, changed the application dates in Article 113, expanded the AI Office's supervisory powers, and made further targeted amendments.
Which EU AI Act articles apply now?
Articles 4 and 5 have applied since 2 February 2025. Chapter V on general-purpose AI models, Articles 51 to 56, has applied since 2 August 2025. Article 49 registration, Article 50 transparency, Article 74 market surveillance and Article 99 penalties have applied since 2 August 2026. Chapter III Sections 1 to 3, covering Articles 6 to 27 for high-risk systems, applies from 2 December 2027 for stand-alone Annex III systems and 2 August 2028 for Annex I embedded systems.

The authentic text is on EUR-Lex under the European Legislation Identifier reg/2024/1689, and the amending regulation under reg/2026/1744. The European Commission also operates an AI Act Service Desk presenting the text article by article. Any summary, including this one, should be checked against the consolidated text before it is relied on.
